Tour of the ADM

Quite possibly the best part of going to Amsterdam was getting to visit my cousin Coreen, and stay with her at the ADM. The ADM is like an artists colony / commune in the industrial part of Amsterdam (about a 20 minute bike ride from the city center). It used to be a drydock and associated office building, but became an artist colony in the 70s, or possibly 80s. Apparently there are a lot of squatters rights in the Netherlands, and if someone isn't using a space, it is possible to squat there and build a community, which these folks have done.

Here's an exterior view of the ADM dry-dock itself. There's also an office building. People live in the office building. This space is primarily for car repair / rebuild and sculpture.

A car repair bay set up largely by Eugene (pronounced O-gen)
A couple of old timey cars in need of repair. O-jen likes old american cars.

There was also a lot of cool scuplture around. Pictured here is a crab that just got moved out of the ADM to make room for more cars, a turtle made of tire treads, and an alien(tm) made of tons of metal.
 The tire turtle!
 The alien from alien!

Coreen has a pretty cozy and pretty place about 100 yards from the drydock itself, on the water. Here is a view of me and Coreen in the common room, a view of the water from the breakfast nook, a couple of exterior views of the home from Coreen's dock, and some views of the water and nearby barges from the dock.

Me and coreen in the main room
The breakfast nook / dining room!

Beautiful sunrise from coreens dock.

A view of the breakfast nook from the dock. Notice half the house is on stilts over the water. the other half is built into the land.

The kitchen and shower room. The outhouse is on a separate dock to the left.

There were also windmills so close you could walk right up to them!

All in all, a super-cool place to stay, and a total adventure. The wood stove kept me totally warm throughout the night, and Coreen was super nice to let me stay in the loft where it was super warm, and dry! Thanks coreen!
