It's 9:30 and my legs are already tired. I left the Amstel bus terminal at 6:30 am and haven't stopped walking around the city. That will be a good workout in lieu of running today, and it has definitely helped wake me up since my on-again-off-again sleep on the bus.
Here's what I've learned so far:
- The Amsterdam map I bought at the truck stop is the best 8 Euro I've ever spent (then again, I haven't spent too many Euros).
- It's super relaxing to walk along the canals in Amsterdam.
- People cycle way crazier here than in denmark. I feel like I'm about to get run over at any second.
- The scrambled eggs and salmon at De Ysbreeker are super-delicious.
- Theres a special coffee called dutch coffee here. It's basically a slightly-less watered down americano from what I can tell.
- The central part of amsterdam is a crazy gamish of beautiful old churches, pot shops, and red light districts. It's totally crazy to see all those things crammed together with regular city traffic bustling through the streets.
- I think I got dog doo on my shoe, and there's literally no grass space to wipe it off. Everything is either paved in stone or a canal. (did you know 1 car / week falls into a canal??)
- While copenhagen has pretty similar christmas stuff, I forgot that amsterdam has it's own wild christmas traditions.
- I probably walked 5-6 miles today in three hours and only got lost like three times. The map DEFINITELY saved me.
Here are some pictures so far.
Obligatory will at starbucks photo. No one out yet, despite the fact it's 8 am.
Cool lights in a shopping district in the AM.
A cool cafe / restaurant in Niewmarket.
A beatuful view of a tower down a canal.
Central station (gigantic!)
